Deaf-accessible Healthcare App

Overview

SilentCare is a telehealth app designed to make healthcare more accessible for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The idea was to rethink the usual telemedicine experience around how deaf users actually communicate, rather than expecting them to adapt to a system built mainly around spoken conversations. The experience brings together accessible consultations, communication preferences, and visual-first interactions in one place.

The Problem

Telemedicine makes healthcare easier to reach, but access means very little when the actual consultation still depends heavily on hearing and spoken communication. For a deaf or hard-of-hearing patient, something as simple as speaking to a doctor can come with extra friction. Communication needs may differ from person to person, yet many healthcare experiences still assume everyone interacts the same way. SilentCare started with a simple question: what would telehealth look like if deaf users were considered from the beginning rather than accommodated afterwards?

Research

The research focused on understanding communication barriers in healthcare and how different deaf and hard-of-hearing users may prefer to communicate. That made one thing especially important: there could not be a single idea of what an “accessible” consultation should look like. Some users may prefer sign language, others may rely more on text or visual communication, and the product needed to leave room for those differences. Those findings pushed the experience beyond simply making an existing healthcare interface more accessible. Communication itself had to become part of the product design. The project was informed by research into deaf culture, communication barriers and accessibility testing.

The Design

Instead of hiding accessibility options somewhere in settings, I wanted them to influence the experience from the start. Users can set their preferred way of communicating, while video consultations support sign-language-based interactions. The interface also relies heavily on visual cues and clear information hierarchy so important actions and information are easier to follow without depending on sound. The challenge was keeping all of this useful without making the product feel like a specialised tool that happened to include healthcare. It still needed to feel familiar, calm and easy to use, just with accessibility built into how the experience works.

Outcome

SilentCare became an exploration of what happens when accessibility shapes the product itself, not just the interface around it. The final concept creates a telehealth experience where communication preferences are recognised early and deaf and hard-of-hearing users have more control over how they interact with healthcare professionals. More importantly, the project reinforced something I strongly believe in as a designer: people should not have to work around a product just to use it. The product should do more of the adapting.
